Ethiopian culture was showcased at its best at the ‘Global Citizenship Day 2019’ at Aspire Academy recently. The Ethiopian embassy and community members were present to highlight what Ethiopia has to offer.
Coffee Arabica, which originated from Ethiopia, was displayed at the event. Coffee is held in high esteem in Ethiopia. It’s not only about sitting and having coffee but it’s a way of togetherness and creating friendships. Normally, a coffee ceremony in Ethiopia takes around 40 minutes. This gave the visitors a platform to learn about the rich cultural heritage of Ethiopia as they sat waiting for the coffee to be prepared for them, as well as while having it. The Ethiopian stall was packed with people who sat on the Ethiopian traditional seats to experience the Ethiopian coffee traditions.
According to an Ethiopian expatriate, coffee is not just important because it’s a very much liked beverage. Coffee is also regarded as a way of bringing the people together. Families and friends gather as one of them roasts coffee beans while they waft the aroma from the coffee. During this time people sit together chit-chatting and discussing issues.
“It’s a way of bringing people together to discuss social issues, whether personal or any other subject. It’s a way of bringing people together to socialise,” she said.
“I like the Ethiopian coffee so much. It’s so authentic,” said another visitor to the venue.
Besides coffee, students
and academicians were served Ethiopian delicacies in a traditional manner.
In addition, people got a chance to learn about the country’s history and tourist attractions through displays on the pavilion’s wall and presentations. “I have learnt a lot about Ethiopia through these displays. The country is so rich in culture and tourist sites. I guess this is the country I shall visit,” said a visitor.
Aspire Academy celebrated the annual ‘Global Citizenship Day’, bringing staff from more than 65 nationalities and showcased their unique cultures under its roof.
Aspire Academy organised the event to celebrate and introduce student-athletes to cultural and ethnic diversity.
