African ambassadors in Doha gathered recently to celebrate the awarding of the 2019 Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize to Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who was named the winner of the top global award.
The Ethiopian prime minister was named the 100th winner of 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for his actions in the region, particularly for having been the pillar of a peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
More than 20 heads of mission attended the event where more than 20 ambassadors were in attendance.
Heads of mission present at the event included those from Kenya, Tanzania, Djibouti, Sudan, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, and Eswatini (Swaziland) among others.
The event was headed by the Eswatini Ambassador to Qatar HE Felizwe Percival Dlamini. The ambassadors praised Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s efforts towards democratic reforms, normalisation of ties with Eritrea, and for bringing regional stability, which contributed to him winning the prestigious prize.
The ambassadors lauded the remarkable efforts Abiy made at home and in the region in only one and a half years in power. They also commended the prime minister for making the African continent proud, and reiterated that “the prize is a pride for every African”.
President of the Group, Felizwe, said, “Many more Africans are coming these days and showing where to go and how to go,” while referring to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as “another African hero after Nelson Mandela”.
Ethiopian ambassador HE Samia Zekaria also addressed the gathering, which was hosted by the embassy, and elaborated the extensive domestic reforms and regional reconciliation efforts the Ethiopian prime minister has successfully pursued.
While congratulating the ambassadors, she hailed the Ethiopian prime minister for the pride he has brought about to the continent.
One of Abiy’s biggest achievements since coming to power in April last year was the peace deal signed three months later, which ended a nearly 20-year military stalemate with Eritrea, following their 1998-2000 border war.
