Barcelona: Spain’s central government in Madrid on Saturday urged Catalan separatist leaders to unequivocally denounce violence after five nights of clashes.
The government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez brushed off Catalan leader Quim Torra’s demand for a meeting. First the law must be respected, then there could be dialogue, Torra was told according to a report by Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia.
Torra had called for an end to violence on Wednesday, but did not go far enough for the central government.
Eighty-three people were arrested in connection with the violent protests that have taken place in Catalonia, local authorities in the north-eastern Spanish region said on Saturday.
Some of the detained were minors, they added. According to media reports a photographer from the newspaper El Pais was also arrested. (DPA)
