Munich: German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has sharply criticised Turkey and the United States following the Turkish incursion into the Kurdish region of northern Syria.
Two developments are “devastating in the long term in my view,” the leader of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party said on Saturday.
One is that the US has turned its back on those who had fought the Islamic State terrorist militia for them on the ground in Syria: “That sets in motion a real question about the reliability of our strongest alliance partner in the world.”
And to fellow member of the Western defence alliance Turkey, Kramp-Karrenbauer said: “NATO partner or not,” if it becomes standard that anyone who feels threatened from a neighbouring region, then violates borders by force of arms, “then we endanger the foundation of the post-war order” that you resolve conflicts with diplomacy and not with the power of the strongest.” (DPA)
