DIPLOMATS of countries with a large workforce in Qatar have hailed the proposed changes in laws regulating expatriate workers and the labour market in Qatar on Wednesday. “I think it will be beneficial for the large Indian community, and indeed other expatriates communities in Qatar, to be allowed to have their adult children continue to work on the sponsorship of their parents,” Indian Ambassador to Qatar HE P Kumaran said.
“Many such youngsters have grown up in Qatar and have completed their education here. They would find it much easier to work here under these new regulations. The second reform, namely permission for businesses to bring in workers on short-term temporary visas will allow greater flexibility and efficiency for short business and contract-management visits, without the need to go through the more complex and time-consuming process of applying for full-fledged work visas”, Kumaran added. “We welcome these new moves and hope that the rights of such temporary employees will also be protected under the recent reforms introduced to labour laws in Qatar,” he said.
Ambassador of Bangladesh to Qatar HE Ashud Ahmed said, “I welcome the historic reforms undertaken by the government of Qatar to bring relief and satisfaction to the expatriate families in the country.”
“These positive measures will go a long way in earning appreciation for Qatar both at home and abroad and enhance, especially in handling the huge migrant workforce engaged in the development of Qatar. The leadership of Qatar undoubtedly deserves special praise for taking these historic decisions to enhance workers’ rights”, Ahmed remarked.
