Lagos: Thirty-eight people were killed when a boat sank in eastern-central Nigeria, the government said. President Muhammadu Buhari referred to the incident “a devastating tragedy” late Tuesday.
Only two of the 40 passengers survived the accident, which occurred on the Kirfi River in Bauchi State on Monday, said local official Bappah Abdu Badara.
A group of people tried to cross the river in an old boat, despite the fact that it was overflowing due to heavy rainfall, according to Badara. (dpa)
