Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) has launched a Postdoctoral Fellowship programme aimed at supporting advanced research by Qatari nationals.
The programme will provide emerging Qatari scholars the opportunity to produce academic publications, refine their research agenda and gain valuable teaching experience, while building their academic and professional network in Qatar and beyond.
According to Dr Ahmad Dallal, dean of GU-Q, postdoctoral programmes are an important source of support in the transition from doctoral student to working professional.
He said, “The aim of this new initiative is to prepare outstanding junior Qatari scholars for university teaching and research careers. By growing postdoctoral opportunities, GU-Q will also advance its core aims of supporting research that is relevant to Qatar’s development goals, strengthening fruitful mentorship collaborations between established and emerging scholars, and contributing to the development of the higher education sector in Qatar.”
The GU-Q Postdoctoral Fellowship is designed to support research in a variety of disciplines, including political science, history, philosophy, literature, comparative religion, economics, social and cultural anthropology, sociology, political theory and international relations.
“GU-Q’s regional and international reputation for research strength in a range of fields in the social sciences and humanities makes the university an ideal host for Qatari postdoctoral candidates,” said Dean Dallal.
The selected candidates will be in residence for one academic year, integrating fully into the vibrant teaching and research environment at GU-Q. They will work with a faculty mentor to design and teach one or two undergraduate courses in an affiliated GU-Q discipline during the fellowship year, hold regular office hours to consult with students, present their research at special seminars and deliver public lectures in their areas of research.
The GU-Q Postdoctoral Fellowship is open to Qatari nationals who received their Ph.D. or D.Phil. degree in the humanities or social sciences after January 1, 2015 or who will have passed the dissertation defence no later than January 1, 2020.
More information about the application process can be found on the university’s website at https://www.qatar.georgetown.edu/about/employment/postdoctoral-fellowship-junior-qatari-scholars.
Interested applicants should apply before December 31, 2019.
