THE National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (Ehsan), organised a conference entitled ‘Rights of the Elderly in the State of Qatar’ on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons on Tuesday.
The event aimed at reviewing the elderly people’s rights situation in Qatar and explore ways to serve them better.
Deputy Chairman of NHRC Dr Mohammed bin Saif al Kuwari welcomed the Cabinet’s approval for establishing the National Committee for Woman, Child, Elderly and Persons with Disabilities Affairs, and described it as an extension of the promotion of the rights of the most vulnerable groups, including the elderly, and an important and a positive indicator of the rights scene in Qatar.
Kuwari added that social sensitivity, religious awareness, and a rich cultural heritage contribute to Qatar’s care for the elderly. Kuwari also praised the important role played by the Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (Ehsan).
For his part, the Executive Director of the Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (Ehsan) Mubarak bin Abdulaziz al Khalifa stressed the keenness of the centre and the NHRC to support the elderly in line with the Second National Development Strategy 2018-2022. He said that the efforts made by Ehsan in empowering and caring for elderly come within the goals of the true religion and Sharia.
