A new Filipino restaurant has opened in Qatar offering a unique concept originating from the Visayas Region of the Philippines.
Called SU TU KIL Restaurant, the new dining spot in town is located at the Mezzanine Floor of Green Garden Hotel and features a menu highlighting the fresh seafood varieties in the country. It brings a slice of one of the three principal geographical divisions of the Philippines to Doha. The Visayan islands is known for its rich gastronomic heritage, historical landmarks and countless tourist destinations.
“SU TU KIL is a first of its kind in the Qatar food scene. The word “sutukil” is an amalgamation of Visayan terms on three cooking styles. “Sugba” means to cook fresh seafood by grilling, “tuwa means to stew fresh food with clear broth and vegetables, and “kilaw” refers to raw seafood dish soaked in vinegar or acidic juices similar to ceviche. Our dishes do not only cater to Filipinos. As Visayan region is frequented by foreign tourists, our food also appeals to all nationalities. We assure you, once you try our specialties, you will say ‘’Kalami Bai’’, a Visayan phrase which means “delicious, savory and tasty,” the restaurant’s Managing Partner Adelaida D. Vitalicio told Qatar Tribune in an interview.
Further sharing the inspiration of the business, Vitalicio said that all their hard work to establish such restaurant is driven by a vision to celebrate the Visayan cuisine.
“This restaurant is a dream family project with a vision to introduce the Visayan cuisine to an international market. We offer a unique and one of a kind menu that reminds the natives of Visayan region of memories of home while giving non-Visayan diners a sneak peek into the rich gastronomic heritage of our beloved region,” Vitalicio said.
“Generally, we aspire to promote Filipino food and be one of the flagship restaurants in the country proudly waving the flag of the Philippines. Similarly, with our humble business venture we want to be a source of blessings and good fortune to some of our compatriots and other nationalities who will be part of our SU TU KIL family. This project is the result of our hard work in our network marketing business, UNO Premier,” she added.
Qatar is a haven of Filipino restaurants given that Filipinos are among the biggest expatriate communities in the country. However, Vitalicio stressed that the difference of their restaurant from other Filipino dining spots is the pride that they put in their every dish to celebrate Visayan cuisine which is rarely available in the local market.
“Visayan food and delicacies are very popular across the Philippines and even globally because of the uniqueness and simplicity of the preparation of our food while giving diners exciting profile of tastes and flavours. We look forward to contributing to the exciting food scene in Qatar,” Vitalicio remarked.
