“It’s an honour for us to celebrate the platinum jubilee of the forum that was established in Qatar in 1959. Bazme Urdu Qatar is probably the first expat organisation in the Gulf countries to have started Urdu literary activities six decades ago,” Bukhari told Qatar Tribune.
He added: “We have invited poets from different regions of India and Pakistan, many of whom would be visiting Qatar for the first time. We are not only hosting a mushaira, but making a sincere effort to bring Urdu-speaking community closer to each other. Our forum is working for the promotion of Urdu language and literature without limiting ourselves to any faith, country or region. Urdu language spreads love and connects people wherever they live because they share common culture and traditions.”
Bazme Urdu Qatar’s members belong to different countries. They regularly converge at different venues to present their poetry and polish their skills under the guidance of senior poets. Various literary forums in Qatar are offshoots of Bazme Urdu. The forum formally started inviting poets from outside Qatar in 1984 and paved the way for international mushaira sessions in Qatar. Since its inception, it has organised several functions to honour men of letters. From 1991 onwards, the forum has been holding objective seminars on legendary maestros like Mir Taqi Mir, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Mirza Ghalib, Amir Khusro, Mir Anis and Akbar Allahabadi.
