Eleven people were killed and 14 wounded in South Sudan overnight to Sunday during tribal clashes over contested land, an official told dpa. The clashes between the Nuer and Dinka clans took place in Eastern Lakes State, said the area commissioner for the county of Nyang, John Malith Tiop. Injured victims were receiving treatment in the Nyang county hospital, he told dpa by phone.
He urged South Sudanese people to settle their disputes peacefully rather than resorting to violence. South Sudan is experiencing a fragile peace after years of civil war, but clashes over resources continue among its pastoral communities. Clashes between the Dinka and Nuer - the nation’s two biggest ethnic groups - also carry a political component.
