THE sun will be exactly vertical on the earth’s equator on Monday (September 23) at 10:50am (Doha time) and the lengths of day and night will be approximately equal across the world due to the Autumnal Equinox phenomenon, Qatar Calendar House (QCH) announced on Saturday.
This phenomenon is important because Autumnal Equinox and all the four astronomical seasons are indicators of climatic changes. Besides, people can observe the exact positions of sunrise and sunset all over the world on this day.
QCH’s expert astronomer Dr Beshir Marzouk said, “On Monday, the lengths of day and night will be approximately the same in the southern and northern hemispheres, including Qatar, where the lengths of day and night will be 12 hours and 7 minutes and 11 hours and 53 minutes respectively. The sunrise and sunset will take place in Qatar at 5:23am and 5:30pm respectively.”
According to Dr Marzouk, the sun will continue to move towards south after the Autumnal Equinox day and it will be exactly vertical on Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere (Winter Solstice day) on December 22, 2019.
The length of summer season this year was 94 days, while the length of the autumnal season will be 91 days.
