Qatar will take on Canada in their crucial match in the ICC World Cup Challenge League Group A in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Sunday.
The match holds a lot of value for both the teams as they are the only unbeaten sides in the six-team tournament with Canada being on the top at the moment. Besides, the winner is likely to end up as the champions too later in the event.
On Friday, Qatar posted a superb four-wicket victory over Malaysia with Mohammed Rizlan stitching two late fighting partnerships.
Chasing a modest 155-run target, Qatar were reeling six down for 50. Rizlan lifted the team with an unbeaten 44 off 98 balls and featured in a 48-run partnership with Gayan Munaweera (28) for the seventh wicket.
Then he added 56 runs for the unbroken eighth-wicket alliance with Dharmang Patel, a top-order player who was used as No. 9 batsman by skipper Iqbal Hussain Chaudhry. The move proved a master stroke as the two frustrated the rivals and seal the win with Patel getting 37 not out in 48 balls, which included five boundaries.
Qatar joined Canada at the top of the six-team standings with four points from two matches while Denmark rose to third on net run-rate from Singapore and Malaysia after securing their first win by beating Vanuatu by 148 runs in another match.
“Everyone thinks of us as underdogs as we’ve not played 50-overs cricket for two years. We have a young side but we know the talent we have in the team,” said Iqbal. “I was very calm at 50-6 as we kept one batsman as our wild card. Dharmang is a top order batsman but I put him lower down the order because we needed him there since Malaysia have quality spinners. Malaysia maybe underestimated him, thinking he was a tail-ender.”
Nazril marked his 50-overs international debut with an unbeaten half-century after Malaysia struggled for runs in the early going, scoring at a rate of two per over to slip to 64-6.
