Two high-level delegations from Germany will visit Qatar in November this year to engage in advanced stages of talks with Qatari authorities for building an LNG receiving terminal in Germany, the country’s top envoy in Doha has said.
In an interview with Qatar Tribune, German Ambassador to Qatar HE Hans-Udo Muzel said that German Deputy Minister of Economy and Energy Thomas Bareiss will visit Qatar on November 1 and Prime Minister of Federal State of Lower Saxony Stephen Well will visit the country by the end of November to hold talks about Qatar’s investment and engagement in the proposed LNG terminal project.
“This LNG terminal project is vital for Germany. It would be a step forward for Germany to finally have its first liquefied natural gas import terminal as the country seeks to diversify its sources of energy supply. We are in talks with Qatar for co-operation on this project as the country is the largest producer of LNG in the world,” the envoy said.
Muzel said that Germany is also looking at Qatar to secure its growing need for energy.
According to reports earlier, Germany is planning to sign long-term LNG contracts with Qatar to do away with its overreliance on Russia’s Gazprom.
“The LNG project will be the most important topic of discussion during the upcoming visits of German delegations to Qatar. The project requires huge investment. The meetings are expected to witness decisions to be made by the Qatari side and the offers to be made by the German side,” he said.
Germany, which is the largest economy and also the largest energy consumer in Europe, targets to get final investment decision in place at the end of 2019, or early next year, for this project.
Besides cooperation in energy, Muzel said, the German delegations will also engage in talks with various Qatari authorities to strengthen bilateral trade between the two countries.
“There is an upswing in trade volume between the two countries. If the purchases of Airbus by Qatar are taken into consideration then we certainly have witnessed huge growth in our bilateral ties over the years. Airbus is a joint project of France and Germany,” he said.
“There is a lot of scope between the two countries to enhance trade ties in the food sector. The German delegations will offer to export more food items to Qatar during the meetings,” he said.
“Talks are also going on between the ports of the two countries to secure regular supplies of food products from Germany to Qatar. A lot of German companies are working on the timely completion of food security project at the Hamad Port,” he said.
