THE Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) is encouraging patients and family members to speak up when it comes to the safety of patients while undergoing treatment.
The officials were going with this year’s theme for Qatar Patient Safety Week’s (QPSW) and in solidarity with the first World Patient Safety Day, WHO slogan ‘Speak Up for Patient Safety’.
Speaking at the fifth QPSW and first World Patient Safety Day on Tuesday, MoPH Acting Director of the Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Department Huda al Katheeri said, “Our programme this year is designed to stress the importance of speaking up for delivery of safer care. Silence isn’t safe. Speaking up is.”
She said that speaking up on patient safety concerns can have a profound effect on preventing harm, promoting teamwork among units and inspire healthcare staff to learn and improve.
“Encouraging patients and family members to speak up when they perceive a potential harm adds a crucial safety net. It also improves their relationship with the care team and builds trust in the system that acknowledges their role in the safety of their loved ones.”
She said that to achieve this, organisations should encourage and empower staff, patients and their families to speak up and voice their concerns if patient safety is at stake. According to her, the week-long campaign on patient safety will be held at different locations.
The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) is running the campaign in schools, health centres and other places. The MoPH will hold a public campaign at the Mall of Qatar on September 19-20 in partnership with QRCS, Doha Clinic and Aster.
On Tuesday and Wednesday (September 18), a number of buildings across Qatar including the MoPH, Aster Hospital, and The Torch Hotel will light up in orange colour to show solidarity with the WPSD activities.
