German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that she currently sees no basis for lifting an export ban on weapons to Saudi Arabia.
“At the moment, I see no precondition for the German government’s position to change,” she said in Berlin when asked about the weapons embargo, which is set to expire at the end of September.
Another member of her centre-right Christian Democratic Union, parliamentarian Juergen Hardt, had called for an end to the ban following drone attacks at the weekend on major Saudi oil facilities, which sent oil prices soaring.
Saudi Arabia’s self-defence is also in the interest of Germany’s stability, Hardt told the Editor Network Germany group.
That position was rejected by other German political parties.
“Given the escalation in the Gulf, it is ludicrous to increase the risks there even more with further arms exports,” Agnieszka Brugger, a defence expert for the Greens, told dpa.
