THE Ambassador of Afghanistan to Qatar HE Abdul Hakim Dalili has praised the enormous efforts being put in by Qatar to help the peace talks between Taliban and the US.
“We thank Qatar for the hospitality and the great support to bring peace. We have confidence in all our allies, especially Qatar, in convincing the Taliban to be more open and willing to make peace,” said Dalili.
The ambassador lamented the war that has claimed so many innocent lives over the years, but added that he was hopeful under the present regime, which was fair and legitimate.
He said: “As elections approach, we aspire for a strong government that fully represents the people.”
The ambassador said the main obstacle in achieving lasting peace in Afghanistan is Taliban’s insistence on war and killing of innocent people. He urged the Taliban to contribute to building the country.
The ambassador condemned the attack in Kabul last week, which prompted US President Donald Trump to call off the negotiations and the secret meeting. “There were many gaps. I believe these gaps are one of the reasons the negotiations were called off,” he remarked.
However, the ambassador exuded hope that with the support of Qatar, things will improve. “Our allies are still hopeful. We are still encouraging the negotiations to get back on track,” he stressed.
“Unfortunately, what is harming us is the circulation of fake news and rumours by a section of the media. Recently I have encountered some very upsetting news in the Al Arabiya channel. Such fake news is intended to harm our relations with our allies, especially Qatar.”
When asked about Trump’s latest move, he said: “We understand the position of the US after the recent attack, but it must be noted that we too have lost innocent lives in this incident, and as I said, gaps existed in the negotiations.”
The ambassador believes, however, that the Afghani government must be more involved as it is the legitimate representative of the Afghani people, and Taliban is required to listen to and contribute to making peace.
The ambassador also praised Qatar’s humanitarian assistance and social investments that strengthen the bonding between the two countries.
