THE 5th Cric Qatar Champions League 2019 kicked off in Doha recently with 48 teams participating.
The opening ceremony of the championship was marked by a musical extravaganza in which nine Doha-based singers enthralled the audience with their renditions.
The singers included Mohinder Jalandhary, Javed Bajwa, Mohd Maqsood, Wakas Amjad, Junaid Jamshed and a renowned poet Shaukat Ali Naaz among three others.
Hosted by HIQ Community Group, the nine-week championship will see some of the most talented players from Qatar vie with one another to help their respective teams lift the coveted Cric Qatar Champions Trophy.
The limited-overs tournament will have the teams divided into eight groups. All the matches will be played on Fridays. The tournament will be held at various grounds located in and around Doha.
The opening ceremony was attended by around 200 players and spectators at a restaurant in Doha. The chief guest for the event was eminent Doha-based Indian businessman MS Bukhari. Bukhari was also felicitated at the event by Mohd Nabi, the vice president of Indian Sports Centre.
The annual tournament is the most prestigious and popular cricket tournament in Qatar. According to Cric Qatar officials, some of the matches of the league will also be live streamed.
Meanwhile, the owners of Indian Hyderabadi Spices Restaurant Gulrez and Amjad Khan wished the participating teams the best.
Syed Rafi, chairman of Cric Qatar, said that he is planning to start the shortest form of the game T10 League on a bigger scale in Doha in the coming months, to showcase and enhance the local talent. “Cric Qatar is excited with the response to this competition. The standard of cricket has surpassed our expectations and we are delighted to see the passion for the game in Doha”, said Mukarram Hussain, member of Cric Qatar organising committee. (TNN)
