The radical Islamist Hamas group claimed responsibility for the downing of an Israeli drone which fell in the southern Gaza Strip overnight.
A spokeswoman for the Israeli army (IDF) confirmed that the drone had been shot down. Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ armed wing, said it downed the drone east of Rafah. The group said in a statement that the drone was on a special mission inside the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian security sources said the drone was transferred to the security authorities for examination.
Israeli drones have repeatedly landed in Gaza, either because of technical defects or they were shot down by Palestinian gunmen.
The incident comes after the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah said on Monday that it had shot down an Israeli drone above southern Lebanon.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said an IDF drone “fell on Lebanese territory during routine activity in northern Israel.” Tensions are high on Israel’s southern and northern borders.
