Kiev: Ukrainian lawmakers on Tuesday passed a bill detailing procedures for a presidential impeachment, fulfilling a campaign pledge by the new leader, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky, a 41-year-old comedian who came to power with a landslide election win in April, commands a parliamentary majority in the Verkhovna Rada.
Under the new bill, parliament will be able to remove the president from power if he commits treason or another grave crime. The bill was only backed by lawmakers from Zelensky’s Servant of the People party while some other MPs pointed to procedural violations during the vote. (AFP)
