The Iranian oil tanker released after being held in Gibraltar for six weeks is headed towards Greece, but has yet to file an official request to dock, Greek Maritime Minister Ioannis Plakiotakis said on Tuesday.
The Adrian Darya 1, formerly the Grace 1, became the subject of a diplomatic dispute between Iran and Britain after it was captured on July 4 off Gibraltar over suspicions that it was carrying Iranian oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions.
The United States warned Greece and other nations that it would view any assistance offered to the tanker as support for terrorism. Aiding the vessel could have potential criminal consequences and Washington would also revoke visas of crew members, a State Department official said.
“The Iranian regime’s tanker is transporting illicit oil to fuel the Iranian regime’s and Syrian regime’s campaigns of terror and oppression,” the official said.
“We have conveyed our strong position to the Greek government on the matter, as well as all ports in the Mediterranean that should be forewarned about facilitating this vessel,” the official said.
Athens authorities are now monitoring the tanker’s course, Plakiotakis said.
