New Delhi: An Indian soldier was killed and four more were injured as Pakistani troops opened fire on Indian frontier posts in the disputed Kashmir region on Tuesday, India’s army confirmed.
India claims it retaliated and caused casualties to Pakistani soldiers, too. It marked the latest in a series of skirmishes that have killed soldiers on both sides over the past week. India’s decision to revoke the special constitutional status of its part of Kashmir and impose a security lockdown on the region has triggered tensions between the neighbours, who have previously fought two wars over Kashmir.
Pakistan and India control parts of Kashmir, but each lays claim to the entire region since the countries gained independence from Britain in 1947. On Tuesday afternoon, Pakistani forces targeted Indian posts across the Line of Control, a de facto border that divides the Himalayan valley into two parts, the Indian army said. (dpa)
