A key economic adviser to President Donald Trump says the administration wants to consider purchasing Greenland, even as the Danish territory has confirmed it is not for sale.
“I am just saying the president, who knows a thing or two about buying real estate, wants to take a look... at the Greenland purchase,” Larry Kudlow told Fox News on Sunday.
“Denmark owns Greenland. Denmark is an ally,” he noted, before mentioning that the territory is in a “strategic” location and has natural resources, such as minerals. “It’s an interesting story. It’s developing. We are looking at it. We don’t know,” Kudlow said. A report in the Wall Street Journal last week said Trump had mused about buying the territory and told advisers to look into the issue.
Trump is due to visit Denmark next month. “Greenland is not for sale,” the territory’s government said in response. In the 20th century, the US had considered buying the island, but was rebuffed by Denmark. The icy territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans is mostly self-ruled, though Denmark remains in charge of foreign affairs.
