The Transport Ministry in Yemen’s internationally recognised government said on Sunday it had suspended its operation in Aden, a week after separatists overran the port city deepening the unrest in the country.
Last week, insurgents linked to the self-styled Southern Transitional Council (STC), which is pushing for the secession of Yemen’s south from the north, captured key institutions and the presidential palace in Aden, the power seat of the Saudi-backed government.
Iran-linked Houthi rebels control Yemen’s capital Sana’a.
The Transport Ministry said on Sunday its suspension decision was due to “circumstances in Aden resulting from the STC coup” against the government.
The ministry added in a statement that pro-STC militias had stormed its offices and were still there.
Both the interior and foreign ministries had earlier announced halting their operations in Aden in protest against the separatist takeover.
It could also cause tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which are part of a Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis. The UAE reportedly backs the secessionist movement in Yemen.
The impoverished country has been locked in a devastating power struggle between the Houthis and the Saudi-supported government since late 2014.
