Following Israel’s move to close the gates of Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque, Jordan summoned the Israeli ambassador in Amman on Sunday, condemning the “Israeli violations” at the city’s Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary holy site.
Jordanian Foreign Ministry Secretary General Zaid al-Lozi conveyed a “decisive message” to the Israeli ambassador, spokesman Sufian al-Qudah said.
Responding to Israel’s closure of the gates of al-Aqsa Mosque and denying Muslim worshippers access, the ministry demanded an immediate halt to attempts to change the legal and historical status of the site.
Clashes erupted last week between Palestinians and Israeli forces at the site known as the Temple Mount to Jews and Al-Haram al-Sharif, or the Noble Sanctuary, to Muslims.
The confrontations took place as the Muslim festival of Eid Al-Adha coincided this year with the Jewish day of fasting and mourning, Tisha B’Av, the day on which the destruction of the Jewish temple is remembered.
Jordan’s Islamic authority, Waqf, oversees the holy sites in East Jerusalem.
