Indian Ambassador to Qatar HE P Kumaran hailed the multifaceted bilateral relations between India and Qatar, during an event organised to celebrate the 73rd Independence Day of India, in Doha on Thursday.
The envoy also thanked the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and the Government of Qatar for their continued support and cooperation, as well as the hospitality and patronage extended to the Indian expatriate community in Qatar.
“The relation between India and Qatar has continued to strengthen further in various areas including political, energy, trade and investment, security and defence, and cultural spheres,” he said, adding, “India is the third largest export destination for Qatar. Total bilateral trade reached $12.3 billion during 2018-19.”
Qatar is the largest supplier of LNG to India, accounting for 55 percent of India’s global LNG imports and 15 percent of Qatar’s total export of LNG, he said, pointing out that India looks forward to enhanced cooperation in the energy sector as the country seeks to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix in the next decade.
“This year is particularly special, as we are celebrating it as the India-Qatar Year of Culture. With the active support and cooperation of the Qatari authorities, we have so far been able to organise some memorable cultural events focusing on popular Indian culture like dance performances, music concerts, painting, calligraphy and photography exhibitions, etc. We have more events lined up for the rest of the year,” he said.
Reading the Independence Day speech of India’s President Ram Nath Kovind on the occasion, he said, “We complete 72 years as a free nation at a very special juncture. In a few weeks from now, on October 2, we will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the guiding light of our successful effort to liberate our nation and of our continuing effort to reform our society of all inequities.”
He said the changes made in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh recently will enable the people to access and enjoy the same rights, same privileges and same facilities as their fellow citizens in the rest of the country.
He expressed confidence that scrapping the provisions of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories will benefit the people of those regions.
He also appreciated the productive first session of the 17th Lok Sabha as Parliament passed many historic bills like Triple Talaq Bill and new Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill.
A number of dignitaries and Indian expatriates living in Qatar participated in the function organised on the premises of the Indian Cultural Centre.
Students from Indian schools in Qatar sang patriotic songs on the occasion.
