It was a panorama of colours that touched the hearts of visitors. A painting exhibition titled ‘Colours of Desert’, which featured dreams and imagination of Indian and Qatari artists, along with other expatriate painters, about Qatar, is attracting a large number of visitors.
The exhibition organised by Katara Cultural Village Foundation in association with Middle East Art and Silk Painters (MAPS) is showcasing 102 artworks by 51 contemporary artists.
Rashmi Agarwal, a noted Indian painter and founder and chairperson of MAPS International, said, “We are getting a huge response to the event. The presence of more than 400 guests at the opening ceremony itself made the exhibition inspiring for participants. It was amazing and everyone appreciated the panorama of colours. We wish that our art touches the hearts and souls of many more.”
Adapting various techniques and influenced by different schools, the participants at the exhibition have portrayed Qatar and its vision of the future. From marine life to forest and tribal life, and life in palaces, the paintings cover a wide range of subjects.
A painting titled ‘Dream- Believe- Build’ by Rashmi Agarwal and another painting titled ‘Qatar National vision 2030’ by Shilpi Mathur grabbed the attention of visitors with their simple stroke and perfect blend of colours.
Indian painter, sculpture and participant Prem Chokli said, “The platform created here is not only an occasion for artists to showcase their talents before international audience, but is also a classroom for learning from others -- where we meet different traditions, imaginations, life and dreams in different angles.”
While Prem Chokli has depicted the Arabian life and tradition with horse at the backdrop of Souq Waqif, Bindu George has highlighted the environment with ‘Conserving Qatar’s Rich Marine Life’ created in acrylic on canvas.
Abstract and realistic paintings have a large share of the displays at the exhibition.
After visiting the exhibition, Qatar businesswoman and author Mervat Ibrhaim said, “The exhibiting was quite inspiring and offered art lovers in Doha to interact with talented local artists and learn about various techniques the painters are following while converting their imagination to canvas using various colours.”
The opening ceremony of the exhibition was attended by Saif Al Dosari, Hamad Mohammed Al Marri, ambassadors, and members of diplomatic missions and dignitaries.
MAPS is a Qatar-based art gallery that helps artists through exhibitions, international festivals, gallery representations, magazine reviews, advertisements, press releases, internet promotion as well as various cultural projects. It has members from different nationalities coming together to create art under one roof. Like the desert’s different colors, this exhibition has seen members of various nationalities showing different cultures through their works.
The exhibition at Katara, Building No 19, is open for public viewing from 10am to 10pm until August 1.
