Sana’a
The United Nations’ special envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, arrived in Sana’a on Tuesday, an airport source said, for meetings with the Houthi rebels a day after meeting their rivals. Griffiths met Yemeni President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi in Saudi Arabia on Monday.
The envoy’s visit to Sana’a also comes after the warring sides met to discuss the stalled truce agreement for the contested port city of Hodeida.
After the two-day meeting, the Redeployment Coordination Committee, which brings together members of the government and the Houthi rebels, agreed on a mechanism and new measures to reinforce the ceasefire and de-escalation of the conflict, the UN said.
The truce agreement for Hodeida went into effect following UN-sponsored peace talks in Sweden in December, though it has been interrupted by separate clashes. The Sweden agreement included a province-wide ceasefire and the withdrawal of fighters.
