The Permanent Population Committee (PPC) observed the World Population Day 2019 which aims at promoting community awareness of population issues, family planning, gender equality, combating poverty and improving maternal health and human rights.
At the ceremony, organised in cooperation with Qatar National Library, Director of the Technical Office of the PPC Abdul Hadi al Shawi said the event to mark the day was aimed primarily at reminding all segments of society of population issues and their importance.
Al Shawi reviewed the role of the committee in following up the national efforts aimed at accomplishing the population document and its specific measures aimed at controlling the rate of population growth and reducing the imbalance of the country’s population structure and its implications.
He also stressed the role of governmental, non-governmental bodies and institutions and their contribution to the effective implementation of the program of work contained in Qatar’s Population Policy Document 2017-2022.
The ceremony screened a short film about the PPC and its role in following up the said Population Policy Document in terms of its main purpose and its objective of ensuring a better life for all who live in the country.
The basic goal of Qatar’s population policy is “achieving balance between population growth and sustainable development requirements, so as to ensure a decent life for the inhabitants of Qatar, enhance their abilities, broaden their options and raise their participation in the progress of the Qatari society.”
This policy seeks to achieve several goals in its six axes, including controlling population growth rates during the period of 2017-2022, leading to gradual reform of the imbalances of the population structure, the development of urban centers away from Greater Doha, the provision of a clean urban environment and the sustainability of natural resources.
It also seeks to improve the quality of education and training, expand opportunities for youth participation in society and in public life, improve the public health of the population, improve the reality of reproductive health and provide services in line with population growth and geographical distribution.
The policy also seeks to support the social participation of women, providing conditions for increasing their participation in the labour force while maintaining family cohesion, ensuring a healthy environment for children, promoting active participation of older persons and persons with disabilities in various community activities, enabling them to integrate into society and continuously improving their means of care.
For his part, Dr Mostafa Kharoufi of the PPC, gave a brief overview of the date of the proclamation of World Population Day issued by the United Nations, pointing out the importance of celebrating this day and its role in recalling pressing population issues.
Meanwhile, Assistant Director of Training and Educational Development Centre of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Nouf Abdullah Mubarak al Kaabi presented the importance of knowledge and its important and effective role in strengthening the individual’s will and confidence.
World Population Day is one of the outputs of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which was first announced in 1989, and is celebrated annually on July 11, the day when the world population reached five billion in 1987.
