More than fifty German municipalities have declared their willingness to take in migrants rescued from boats on the Mediterranean, an Interior Ministry spokesman said in Berlin on Tuesday.
The municipalities have stated their readiness in writing.
Last week, the German aid organisation Sea-Watch rescued more than 50 people drifting in a dinghy off the coast of Libya, but the Italian government prevented its vessel, Sea-Watch 3, from entering port.
The Italian authorities did allow 10 migrants to land, including three minors, two pregnant women and two sick men.
Sea-Watch expressed criticism of the German government, accusing it of stalling while awaiting an EU-wide solution.
“Germany is called upon,” Sea-Watch spokesman Ruben Neugebauer said, alleging that Interior Minister Horst Seehofer was blocking a solution. But he also called for broad involvement of the EU member states coordinated by the EU Commission.
