Qatar Cancer Society (QCS), supported by Carrefour, hosted ‘Hope Iftar’ to celebrate cancer survivors on Wednesday.
The event, which is part of ‘Your Life...Is Our Life’, was launched in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)’s Hamad General Hospital and National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR) in 2017. Its aim is to provide psychological support to cancer patients through hospital visits and generate positive impact on response to treatment.
Speaking to media persons, QCS Head of Individuals Living With Cancer Support Department Dana Mansour said the event was part of their activities for psychosocial support for patients and their families, as well as the survivors.
“This is one of the programmes that aim to improve the overall quality of life for the patients during and after treatment as well as the survivors,” she said.
Mansour said they invited the entire family, relatives, caregivers as well as friends of cancer survivors because the disease doesn’t only affect the patients, but also everyone around them.
She said various organisations from the health sector have also been supporting the programme.
During the event, the survivors shared their inspiring stories about how they were able to fight the disease.
Dr Mohamed Shaaban, who survived colon cancer, said he was grateful for the support he received from QCS.
Inspiring others, Dr Shaaban said, “Being diagnosed with cancer is not the end of life. One has to be strong. It is just an unwelcome guest. It is a disease just like any other disease. However, one has to have a healthy diet,” he said.
Khalid Aref Abdullah also shared his fight with the disease.
Lucy Mbugua, whose four-year-old son Adneymiles Mwai Wachira was diagnosed with leukemia in December 2017, said: “I am so grateful for the support we have received. We have never paid anything for his treatment. Even the chemotherapy sessions are free.”
‘Your Life...Is Our Life’ programme aims to put a smile on the faces of children and adults who are undergoing cancer treatment while assuring them cure with the treatment.
