The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has provided aid worth QR8.15 billion ($2.24 bn) since 2015, according to its 2018 annual report, which pegged the annual growth of its aid at 19 percent.
The annual report was launched under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and QFFD’s Chairman HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani, by Deputy Chairman HE Sultan bin Saad al Muraikhi.
“Qatar Fund for Development has provided financial aid and effectively responded to calls for humanitarian and development assistance in many countries,” its Director General Khalifa bin Jassim al Kuwari has said.
In 2018 alone, he said, the fund’s assistance reached more than QR2.1 billion ($585 mn). This included $206.7 million in humanitarian aid and $378.6 million in development assistance.
“On behalf of Qatar, this aid was distributed among 70 countries across the world.”
The total value of aid to Arab countries amounted to $451.8 million, while that to to Africa totalled $64 million and Asia $28.5 million, he said, adding that an aid of $17.9 million was disbursed in North and South America.
In terms of international and multilateral organisations, Kuwari noted that the amount of assistance provided for their core funding has reached $20.1 million.
The fund’s operations, he said, was focused on empowering people through the promotion of education, health and economic development.
“The increase in annual allocations to these sectors attests to this focus and reflects our belief that these sectors serve as the foundation for human and economic development and a gateway for achieving peace and justice,” Khalifa added.
In addition to providing assistance to many countries in the world, QFFD, through its various partnerships, has been able to fund UN organisations with $20.1 million as means to explore innovative solutions to the problems facing the developing countries today, especially populations living below the poverty line.
