The 72nd Session of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) World Health Assembly kicked off in Geneva on Monday with the participation of Qatari delegation chaired by Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed al Kuwari.
The meetings, held under the theme ‘Health for all’, will continue until May 28. It will discuss the provision of primary healthcare as a means to achieving universal health coverage. The meetings will also discuss about community health workers, while reviewing the preparations for the high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on comprehensive health coverage and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Plan 2030.
The meetings will also discuss public health emergency preparedness and response, where the report of the Independent Oversight and Advisory Committee for the WHO Health Emergencies Program will be discussed along with WHO’s work on health emergencies and International Health Regulations (2005).
The meetings will also discuss the health conditions in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem and in the occupied Syrian Golan, WHO reform processes, including the transformation agenda, and implementation of United Nations development system reform, multilingualism and agreements with intergovernmental organisations.
It will also discuss health, environment and climate change, address the global shortage of, and access to, medicines and vaccines, follow-up on the high-level meetings of the UN General Assembly on health related issues: antimicrobial resistance, prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and ending tuberculosis.
It will discuss other technical matters such as pandemic influenza preparedness, access to vaccines, member states’ mechanism on substandard and falsified medical products, human resources for health, promoting the health of refugees and migrants, global action on patient safety, water, sanitation and hygiene in healthcare facilities, and smallpox eradication.
On the sidelines of the conference,Dr Kuwari met separately on Monday with Minister of Health and Medical Education of Iran Dr Saeed Namaki and Minister of Health and Social Affairs of Sweden Lena Hallengren. During the meetings, they discussed ties of cooperation between Qatar and the other two countries, especially in health sector, along with a number of topics of common concern.
The meetings of the 52nd ordinary session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health and its executive office were held on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly with the participation of Qatar. The meeting discussed a number of topics, most prominently the Arab Board of Health Specializations, the health conditions of the people in Palestine, the unified word of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health to the 72nd Session of the World Health Assembly,as well as the Arab strategy on providing public health services in the context of asylum and displacement in the Arab region, in addition to the formation of the Arab doctor award committee and the formation of the executive office of the Council of Arab Ministers of Health.
