SEEKING more international partnerships and cooperation in different legal fields, the Public Prosecution held a seminar on Monday on combating cyber crime and sports betting, in cooperation with the French High School of Justice.
Opened by Attorney General HE Hamad bin Fetais al Marri and the French Ambassador to Qatar HE Franck Gellet, the seminar is part of the management of major sports events course conducted jointly by the Public Prosecution, and the French Ministry of Justice since 2015, and saw participation by 10 members from the Public Prosecution.
Marri stressed the importance of focusing on combating cyber crime “as it is increasing and includes very sensitive issues such as manipulating elections which leads to changing people’s will”, he said.
“The whole world is facing this issue and nobody is safe from cyber crimes and critical cyber hacks. Therefore, we need to cooperate with the French to exchange expertise in this important field”, he said during a press conference to announce the launching of the seminar.
He added that Qatar had signed a number of judicial cooperation agreements with the French side, the latest of which was on combating cyber crime and terrorism signed last month.
Marri affirmed that these agreements aim to benefit from the exchange of expertise and technological know-how to confront cyber crime, keeping pace with the virtual world in which all types of criminal activities are practised.
On his part, the French envoy said that France and Qatar have been working together in the legal field for a long time and have been conducting seminars on special topics every year since 2004.
“The legal and judicial cooperation between the French and Qatari sides has made huge progress in recent years, thanks to the great relations between both the countries. The constantly evolving relations include cooperation in all fields, including in Qatar’s hosting of 2022 FIFA World Cup”, he added.
Head of the Institute of Criminal Studies Dr Hamad Mohammed al Nuaimi said the cyber crime seminar comes as the sixth training activity with the French side, as part of the major sports events course.
He added that since its inception in 2015, the course has included risk management assessment, judicial environment for major international sporting events and World Cup-related bets, reference to judicial experience during the 2016 European games, cyber crime and counterfeiting, media management, crisis management, crime management, criminal assistance, collective accident management and international cooperation.
