THE fifth edition of the Young Qatari Writers Competition organised by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, in association with the US Embassy and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar) in Qatar, concluded at Qatar National Library on Monday in the presence of participating school students and their parents.
As many as 135 students from schools affiliated to the ministry took part in the competition held in English, making it the largest edition to date. The competition is designed for students of grades 5, 8 and 10 in public schools for boys and girls.
It aims to promote the use of English professionally and creatively, and to encourage students to express themselves and their views in English on important contemporary regional and international topics.
VCUarts Qatar Executive Dean at Donald N Baker said the competition demonstrates how the richness of the creative arts can energise society. Students are uniquely encouraged to think critically about pressing world issues and then transform and share their ideas through creative writing.
Head of the English department Sheikha al Rumaihi said the competition is designed to encourage Qatar’s youth to read, write and critically reflect on important topics.
