A Qatari-funded initiative has picked, for the first time, students residing in Qatar for a scholarship that originally began as a programme to empower marginalised youth in Gaza.
Thirty-two resident students have been accepted into the first edition of the Dynamic Futures Qatar scholarship, provided by Al Fakhoora — a youth empowerment programme run by the Qatari-funded Education Above All (EAA) initiative.
The recipients of the scholarship programme for the school year 2018-2019 were announced and awarded during a special ceremony held at the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS) Auditorium on Thursday.
The programme aims to provide young adults between 17 and 25 years of age, who have spent most of their formative years in Qatar, with access to higher education. “We believe that, by investing in human capital, we enable young people to play a key role in building their communities and unlocking their full potential,” said Fatima al Khater, President of the Dynamic Futures Qatar programme.
The initiative is modelled after Al Fakhoora’s Dynamic Futures Scholarship and Empowerment programme, which originated in Gaza and is currently running in seven regions —West Bank, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Iraq, besides Gaza. It works to enable marginalised Palestinian and Syrian refugees and internally-displaced people to make contributions to their host and home communities.
