General Eberhard Zorn, Germany’s chief of defence, sees Russia as “a big threat” to peace in Europe.
“In terms of Europe, the facts speak for themselves,” Zorn told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland group of publications in comments published on Saturday.
Zorn referred to the Russian occupation of the Crimea; the situation in eastern Ukraine; the poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergej Skripal in Britain; and Russia’s suspension of its participation in the INF nuclear missile treaty.
Taken together, “all of this has a quality all its own,” Zorn asserted.
Fresh disarmament efforts were needed, Zorn said with regard to the INF treaty. “Were this agreement to disappear completely, I would be worried about how things would go on in terms of medium-range missiles,” he said, adding that a new monitoring system would become necessary.
