Abdullah bin Nasser Turki al Subaie, Chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority, has said the construction for the expansion of Hamad International Airport (HIA) will begin in the second half (H2) of this year.
“Preparations are under way for the expansion of HIA where construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2019,” Subaie said in an interview with Oxford Business Group.
The expansion will increase the HIA’s capacity of passengers from 30 million passengers to more than 53 million passengers per year, he said, adding that the airport will continue to provide a unique experience for visitors.
He said the Civil Aviation Authority has entered into agreements with many countries resulting in more transport rights, thus increasing the number of passengers travelling through Hamad International Airport.
He said the authority has strengthened its strategic relationship with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
He said preliminary results of the international audit carried out by ICAO on air safety system places Qatar in the ranks of the most developed countries. The civil aviation industry in Qatar is very strong and occupies a prestigious position globally, he said. Civil aviation is no longer just a normal means of transport, but has become an important industry with significant impact on economy, he added.
“Today, Qatar is one of the most-developed countries in the industry and has secured top global position in modernising its aviation safety systems,” he said
