THE emergency teams in Qatar’s various municipalities on Saturday drained 12.91 million gallons of rain water (12,917,280 gallons) from different areas until evening following heavy rains that lashed the country.
The exercise is being carried out by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to ensure safety of residents and ensure smooth and uninterrupted traffic flow on the roads.
Safar Mubarak al Shafi, director of the General Hygiene Department and chairman of the Rain Emergency Committee at the ministry, said that 527 field teams were deployed, and 251 tanks and 30 pumps pressed into service to carry out the exercise. Altogether 2,693 trips were made.
The teams were sent promptly to affected sites following information received through the hotline 186 immediately after the rains, Shafi pointed out.
He said that the teams will continue to perform their duties in all affected areas of the country until these are cleared of waterlogging.
According to him, the prompt action by the ministry, in coordination with all other parties, has ensured smooth traffic movement on all the major streets and normal functioning of educational institutions, health centres and other organisations in the country.
