The unjust siege imposed on Qatar was a turning point for geopolitics in the region and the only way to move forward is coming to the negotiating table, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani has said.
“This will only happen when these (siege) countries realise that the blockade will not be the way to achieve their goals, or to remove their fears, regardless of their definition,” Sheikh Mohammed said during an open dialogue hosted by Georgetown University on Tuesday.
The FM said, “We appreciate the valuable contributions made by our diverse society and the role it continues to play in the future development of the country.”
“We are proud of Georgetown University in Qatar, which has graduated more than 440 students so far, including 12 graduates working for us at the State Department, who are part of the team that worked during the blockade,” the FM said.
The Georgetown campus in Qatar currently houses more than 50 different nationalities.
In a response to questions about the future of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Sheikh Mohammed stressed the importance of the block as a framework for regional cooperation and coexistence.
The FM spoke of his role as Chairman of the Board of the Qatar Development Fund as an institution dedicated to improving the lives of people and communities around the world.
“Last year, the Qatar Development Fund provided assistance to 71 countries and provided grants amounting to about $585 million, 30% of which was allocated to education. If we want to achieve stability in the future, we should invest in tools that enable people to achieve that stability,” he added.
The seminar was attended by Dean of Georgetown University in Washington, Dr Robert Groves, Dean of the Edmund Walsh College for International Affairs, Dr Joel Hellman, and a large number of Georgetown University students, faculty and staff members and members of the diplomatic corps.
Dr Ahmed Dalal, Dean of Georgetown University in Qatar, said: “As far as our international relations students are concerned, this is a valuable opportunity for direct dialogue with a prominent figure in the highest decision-making in Qatar, and to gain a direct understanding of the power of diplomacy and its importance in building multilateral international relations in today’s world.”
