Technology is revolutionising agriculture and Qatari farmers are in the forefront of using it. Farming is now possible all around the year, thanks to the use of LED or dark room technology.
The innovative technology has not only helped farming become all-season affair, it also enhances production.
Speaking about the LED technology at an event in Doha, Managing Director of Al Tahaluf Food Stuff & Trading Ajay Chopra said, “We have been working on LED technology for the last three years. Now we are going commercial on a big scale. LED lighting technology is more effective and better than traditional light sources. Applying LED lighting to agriculture can help reduce energy consumption and avoid wastage of energy. In this system, farmers adjust light sources according to different stages of plant growth.”
According to the technology, the spectrum and colour of lights can be used during different stages of a plant’s growth. While blue light helps sprouting of seeds, red light can facilitate photosynthesis, sprouting, flowering and fruiting.
Based on this characteristic, different kinds of plants have different spectrum demands.
The agricultural lighting system involves light sources, lamps and control systems. With this technology, farmers can grow their crops indoors entirely and mitigate the threat of pests and diseases.
This evolution will not only upgrade the level of modern agriculture production but will also open up endless market potential for farmers.
“Now, we are also supporting other farmers who are ready to follow the latest technology and enhance the level of production,” Chopra added.
