Qatar Charity (QC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior (MoI), represented by the General Directorate of Traffic (GDT), organised a symposium entitled ‘Traffic Awareness and Human Culture’ to raise awareness of the safe use of roads to avoid traffic hazards and save lives and properties.
The symposium was held as part of the second round of the third season of the ‘Competitors’ programme, which is produced by Qatar Charity in partnership with the Al Quran Al Kareem Radio.
The symposium was attended by Director-General of The General Directorate of Traffic Brigadier Mohammed Saad al Kharji and CEO of Qatar Charity Yousif Bin Ahmed al Kuwari, many officials from the Ministry of the Interior and Qatar Charity, university students and the students of the Police College.
The symposium discussed several topics such as traffic awareness, human culture, charity work, comparing the vehicle use in Qatar to the need for transportation in other countries where Qatar Charity works.
The event also focused on wrong behaviours and their link to traffic culture, in addition to the causes of accidents.
Ahmed Saleh al Ali, director of Media and Communication Department at QQ, praised the General Directorate of Traffic for its efforts to save lives and properties.
“We always work on promoting human dignity everywhere. This is the mission of Qatar Charity, which seeks to achieve it with your support. The ‘Competitors’ programme is one of the thousands of programmes and projects implemented worldwide by Qatar Charity with the support of the people in Qatar,” Ali said.
Brigadier Kharji emphasised the importance of community partnership and cooperation between the state institutions and individuals to ensure traffic safety, noting that everyone is responsible for the preservation of life and property while driving or walking on any road or street.
On his part, Kuwari expressed his happiness over the fruitful partnership with the General Directorate of Traffic, praising its efforts in raising traffic awareness among all segments of the society to ensure that they use vehicles safely.
He also announced Qatar Charity’s support for the directorate by publishing an informative brochure in Arabic, English and Urdu languages, which will include a number of awareness tools and will be offered to new drivers as a gift.
Speaking at the symposium, Major Jaber Mohamed Odaiba, assistant director of the Traffic Information and Awareness Department, said: “The rates of traffic accidents registered in Qatar during 2018 have significantly declined in comparison to global rates.”
He noted that wrong traffic behaviours are the main cause of accidents.
According to Odaiba, the misbehaviour while driving occurs due the driver’s lack of awareness of the importance and benefits of the vehicle as a means of transportation not entertainment.
Odaiba also listed the main causes of accidents to include negligence, lack of attention, wrong overtaking, deviation from the path, leaving insufficient distance and traffic signal violations.
Captain Abdul Wahid al Anzi shed light on the project of MoI’s team, represented by the General Directorate of Traffic, which will be implemented in Kyrgyzstan as part of the participation in the ‘Competitors’ programme.
The team aims to build ten houses for the poor people and a school in Kyrgyzstan, as Anzi stated, urging people in Qatar to listen to the Al Quran Al Kareem Radio and contribute to the completion of this important project.
Dr Abdul Rahman al Harami described vehicle as a favour of Allah the Almighty, highlighting its importance to poor communities and their need for such vehicles to make their lives easier, while Dr Ayesh al Qahtani shed light on the suffering the poor go through across the globe in the absence of transportation.
At the end of the symposium, the QC CEO honoured Brigadier Kharji in recognition of the directorate’s outstanding role in enhancing traffic safety in the country and its significant efforts in humanitarian work through its participation in the Competitors’ programme.
