Citizens should participate extensively in the elections of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) for its 6th session. They should exercise their right, as a national duty, to strengthen the democratic and developmental process of the country. This call was made by participants at a symposium organised by Qatar University (QU) on Monday.
The symposium was organised in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) entitled ‘The Right to Vote and Run for Elections’.
Vice-President for Academic Affairs Dr Omar al Ansari said that participation in the electoral process is a national duty and a consolidation of the principle of democracy.
He added that giving individuals the opportunity to exercise their role in political life effectively in any community reflect their cultural and social awareness, calling on all citizens in QU to participate actively in the elections. He stressed that societies grow and flourish with the participation of all its citizens in all aspects of development by promoting the values of participation and the right to exercise all their rights, the most important of which is the right to vote and run without discrimination as stipulated in the international covenants.
NHRC member Mohammed Saif al Kuwari said participation in the electoral process is a national duty, calling on all Qatari people to participate and cast their votes to deepen democratic behaviour and promote democratic progress and political prosperity.
Lieutenant Saleh Jassim al Mohammadi, member of the legal committee for Municipal Council Elections, highlighted the importance of elections due to the Council’s role in monitoring the implementation of laws, decisions and regulations related to the powers and competences of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.
