There was a noticeable drop in the traffic congestion level in Qatar in 2018, thanks to completion of key road projects.
According to Qatar Traffic Report released by Qatar Mobility Innovations Centre (QMIC), the number of hours wasted by commuters due to traffic congestion has declined to 98 hours during 2018 as compared to 109 hours in 2016 (almost 10 percent).
“This indicates that road projects completed by Ashghal in 2018 had positive impact on traffic flow. We expect the commuters’ traffic behaviour to keep improving as key ongoing road projects will be completed in 2019. And add to that the fact that Doha Metro will start operations in the next 1-2 years,” Dr Adnan Abu Dayya, QMIC CEO, said.
The major congested roads in Doha were C, D, E Ring roads, Al Forousiya Street, Ahmed Bin Ali street, Al Bustan Street (Musaimeer), Abdulrahman Bin Jassim Street.
The report said February, March and November were the most congested months in the year.
The highest congestion period during the work days was the evening peak hours (around 6-7pm).
In the morning peak hours of work days, Monday had the highest congestion index and Thursday had the lowest congestion index.
According to the report, the economic cost of congestion in 2018 was estimated to be between QR5.5 to QR6.9 billion. Doha has less wasted hours in traffic congestions compared to other cities in the world.
“For example, the average wasted hours in traffic congestions in Boston is 220 hours per year whereas in Istanbul it is above 150 hours. Doha has much less wasted hours than that,” Dayya said.
