Qatari suppliers in partnerships with international firms are capable enough to source 100 percent materials, goods and services required in the local market, Ministry of Finance Government Procurement Regulatory Department Director Abdulaziz Zeid Rashid al Taleb said on Sunday.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of a joint press conference to announce the details of the fourth edition of Government Procurement and Contracting Conference and Exhibition (Moushtarayat), Taleb said the number of Qatari suppliers certified by the ministry has gone up to 2,123 ever since the first edition of Moushtarayat was launched in 2016.
“The number of such suppliers that meet our criteria for supplying goods and services is expected to rise further as we have updated the Moushtarayat website to encourage the private sector, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to participate in a wide range of public tenders announced throughout the year,” Taleb said.
As per the records of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MoIC), he said, over 70,000 private firms are active in Qatar.
“This is a huge number and we want more private firms to participate in government tenders,” he said.
Through Moushtarayat, Taleb said, the ministry educates local SMEs about the procedures involved in existing public tenders extended by big buyers such as larger private sector companies, semi-governmental and governmental bodies,” he said.
Slated to begin on March 31, the three-day Moushtarayat 2019 is expected to showcase new opportunities worth billions of dollars for the government-private sector cooperation.
“Qatari suppliers won procurement contracts worth QR71 billion during the last three editions of Moushtarayat, accounting for 67 percent of the total contracts issued by the government during that period,” he said.
The volume of procurement contracts during the upcoming Moushtarayat will be much larger than the previous edition as the government has allotted more fund for timely completion of various large projects in the country, Taleb said.
“Qatari suppliers have grown in quality and size over the years. They have tied up with many large suppliers all across the world to ensure the smooth supply execution of various projects in the country. They are capable enough to meet 100 percent demand in the Qatari market. We expect more share for Qatari companies in billions of dollars of contracts to be announced during the fourth edition of Moushtarayat,” he said.
As many as 58 government entities award contracts to private sector firms through Moushtarayat, Taleb said.
