FANS of Korean dramas and music in Qatar are in for a treat as Korean fusion band Queen is set to perform at the Katara Drama Theatre on March 30.
The band will perform an array of Korean music, including soundtracks of popular Korean TV series and songs by internationally-renowned K-Pop groups.
The event titled ‘Fantastic Sounds of Korea’ is being organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Qatar in partnership with the Korea Foundation, an organisation established to enhance awareness and understanding of Korea throughout the international community.
The show will also serve as a kick-off event for a slew of cultural programmes to be hosted by the embassy this year.
“The Korean Fusion band Queen consists of musicians playing four different instruments, including gayageum (zither), daegeum (flute), janggu (drum) and electric violin. The band introduces audience from all over the world to Korean music as they beautifully incorporate both Eastern and Western musical elements,” Korean Ambassador to Qatar HE Kim Chang-mo said during a luncheon meeting hosted by the embassy on Sunday.
“Queen has managed to popularise Korean music by playing various famous musical pieces including classical masterpieces, movie and television soundtracks as well as pop songs. This allowed them to reach out to young and old audiences alike across the globe. Following in the footsteps of the K-pop craze, Queen has performed in over 60 cities in 40 countries,” the envoy added.
Queen’s exciting repertoire for their Doha concert will include Onara which is the ending theme song of the widely-popular Korean TV series Dae Jang Geum, also known as Jewel in the Palace. They will also perform a medley of songs by famous Korean girl group Blackpink as well as the song ‘Idol’ by K-Pop group BTS. Furthermore, Queen will showcase their reinterpretation of Arirang, a Korean folk song that is estimated to be over 600 years old and listed on the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. A special song for Qatar will also be part of the performance of Queen, according to the envoy.
Ambassador Chang-mo said the Korean cultural events planned by the embassy for the year also include a classical concert to be staged in October, a taekwondo demonstration by Kukkiwon Demonstration Team in November and another classical concert in December.
