Luxembourg: Some 580,800 first-time asylum seekers applied for protection in EU member states in 2018, 11 percent fewer than in 2017, the statistics agency Eurostat reported on Thursday.
The 2018 total is slightly less than half the amount of applications in 2015, the peak year, and is comparable to 2014 levels, Eurostat said.
Both migration numbers and asylum applications swelled in 2015-16, when the war in Syria spiralled and other Middle Eastern states were wracked with fresh turmoil. Those nationalities continue to be the top groups seeking protection. (AFP)
