A “meticulously chosen” line- up of central bankers, scholars and experts from more than 22 countries in East Asia, Africa and Europe will converge in Qatar on March 19 to participate in the fifth Doha Islamic Finance Conference.
They will share their expertise and insights on a broad range of topics from sharia law in Islamic banking to growth prospects of Islamic financial institutions under the theme, “Islamic finance and the digital world”.
Being organised under the patronage of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani, the high-profile conference promises to explore, among other things, the possibility of establishing an integrated digital Islamic bank in Qatar. It will be held in the Al-Majlis Hall of Sheraton Hotel in Doha on Tuesday.
The conference will also feature specific discussions on mobile banking, fintech, blockchain and cryptocurrencies, besides the effects of digital development on Islamic finance and mechanisms to prevent potential risks, said the chairman of the committee responsible for organising the conference, Dr Khaled bin Ibrahim al Sulaiti.
The conference will also include discussions on digital economy and sustainable development, and ways to achieve Qatar Economic Vision 2030 through digital economy, he added.
Sulaiti is also the chairman of Islamic-investment-banking-service-provider Bait Al-Mashura Finance Consultations, which is the primary organiser of the conference. Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and Barwa Bank are the “diamond” sponsors of the event. It will be held in partnership with Qatar University’s College of Sharia and Islamic Studies and College of Business and Economics, and Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Islamic Studies.
The conference is one of the world’s leading international events on Islamic finance, said QFC CEO Yousuf Mohamed al Jaida, adding that this year’s edition would tackle an “incredibly important” subject — Islamic finance in the digital world.
The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs is actively involved in helping organise the conference as it believes the event would go a long way in promoting Islamic economy in Qatar, said the ministry’s endowments department director general, Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Mohammed al Thani.
QU’s College of Business and Economics Dean Dr Khalid al Abdulqader, his HBKU counterpart Dr Emad El Din Shahin and Barwa Bank Chief Communications Officer Talal Ahmed al Khaja also addressed the event announcing the conference.
