School strikes called to muster more action to tackle climate change are planned in almost 500 cities and towns in 57 countries, organizers said on Monday.
The March 15 protests are inspired by Swedish teen environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg.
Thunberg has staged a weekly protest outside parliament in Stockholm since August 2018 that has spread and inspired pupil demonstrations calling for climate action around the world under the #FridaysForFuture slogan.
“We are striking to tell our governments to do their homework,” a petition posted on Facebook read ahead of the global day of action.
Protests were planned outside town halls and national parliaments in countries spanning from as far as Australia to Uruguay.
Thunberg on Friday joined several thousand students for a demonstration in Hamburg, on her first such visit to Germany.
The 16-year-old has addressed world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as well as the UN climate conference held last year in Katowice, Poland.
At the weekend, German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced her support for youth who have skipped school to protest political inaction about climate change.
