Dr Hamid R Parsaei, professor in the Mechanical Engineering Program at Texas A&M University at Qatar (Tamuq), has been elected to the College of Fellows of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
Since 1986, the SME College of Fellows has honoured members who have made outstanding contributions to the social, technological and educational aspects of the manufacturing profession. This highly prestigious honour can only be earned through 20 years or more of dedication and service.
Parsaei earned his PhD from the University of Texas at Arlington (US) and joined Tamuq faculty in 2010. At Tamuq, he has served as associate dean for academic affairs and director of academic outreach. He also holds the rank of professor at Texas A&M’s main campus in College Station, Texas. He was previously professor and chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Houston (US), and a faculty member at the University of Louisville (US). From 2001 to 2005, he was director of the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center Gulf Coast Region. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas.
Parsaei’s teaching and research interests include automation and robotics, additive manufacturing, cellular manufacturing systems, modelling emergency evacuation, engineering economic decision analysis and project management. He has been author or co-author of more than 280 refereed publications in archival journals and conference proceedings. Parsaei has been principal and co-principal investigator on projects funded by the US National Science Foundation, Qatar Foundation, the US Department of Homeland Security, NIST, NIOSH and the Texas Department of Transportation, with total funding of more than $26 million.
Widely known and respected in his field, he is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and Industrial Engineering and Operations Management Society International (IEOM). He has received several awards from IISE including the 2016 George L Smith Award for Excellence in Promotion of Industrial Engineering and the 2018 Fred C Crane Distinguished Service.
